1. Location and Geomorphology

Islet of the northeastern Aegean, formerly known as Rachia or Paskia. It is located western of Nisyros, 2 nautical miles away from cape Petrodes.

It belongs to the eastern part of the Aegean volcanic arc, which is still active. The island is actually an uneven volcanic mountain 106 m high, comprising of andesite and sinter. Volcanic vaults with very small, oblong craters have been discovered in the area of Pacheia during recent submarine researches. Its coasts are steep and abrupt. Its ground is inaccessible.

2. Flora and fauna

Lush, bushy vegetation complements the rocky scenery. What is notable about its fauna is that no kind of the Podacris lizard can be found on other islands located eastern of the central Aegean fault, save Pacheia, which indicates recent colonization from the Cyclades.

3. General information

Pacheia is of archaeological interest, since a part of an ancient defensive tower, integrated into an enceinte made of drystone, has been found there.

The island is circumstantially inhabited by shepherds, since it has always been used as pastoral land.
